Most of us are so excited when we (finally) upgrade our phones that we jump right in, and never read a manual unless we absolutely can’t
figure something out. Sure, most phones are so user-friendly you really can dive right in. But all the little tips and tricks you pick up
along the way make your new device so much more fun and efficient to use. Here are a few goodies I’ve found out that I didn’t know about
until I had my Android for…well, for a while.
Discover What a Long Press Is
A long press is just what it sounds like: instead of tapping on something, you hold your finger there just a little longer. When you do this for
certain functions, you’ll find its purpose is to help you not go through multiple steps to do any particular task or function.
Navigate Between Your Most Recently Used Applications
Use that long press you just learned about by trying it out on the Home key (the one that looks like a little house). When you do, you’ll see your
most recent apps, and you can easily go back and forth between them.
Create Short cuts
Long press on your home screen, and select Shortcut from the menu that pops up. Here you can add all sorts of Short cuts that will now appear on
your home page, even a shortcut to a person’s contact information. If you call or text your husband often, paste a shortcut with his info on your
home page and save yourself a couple steps. All Short cuts will appear as icons on your home page.
Tidy-Up Your Home Screen – Create folders for Apps
Long press on your home screen again, and this time click on Folder. Create as many folders as you like to organize all your apps. Click
and drag apps to the new folders.
Utilize Your Voice Search
Your device understands a lot more commands than you realize! Take advantage of this by using it to help you quickly text, call, or
email people. You can also ask your phone to navigate somewhere for you or search for something via the Internet.
Send a Note to Yourself
If you are anything like me, something has to be written down in order for you to remember it. Android phones have great way to do this.
Click on your Voice Search, say “note to self” and speak what you want to remember. Your phone will send you an email with the information.
Email, Text, or Call Someone Faster
In your contacts, click on the photo of the person you are looking for and you’ll instantly be presented with options to call, text, or email that person.
Type a Little Faster
Instead of inserting a period while typing, just press the spacebar twice. The period will be inserted for you, along with a space after.
Avoid Calls from Your Mother-in-Law – or Anyone Else
Did you know you can send a call straight to voice mail – every time that number appears as an incoming call? Edit the contact, scrolling down
until you see “Additional Info”, and select “Send Straight to Voice Mail”. Genius!
Take a Photo of Yourself
Android phones have two cameras, the main and secondary. To take a self-portrait, you’ll need to go into your camera app settings and select secondary.
